Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between the Dementia Management Strategies (DMSs) and the emotional adjustment for the demented elderly persons¢¥ primary caregivers. The emotional adjustment was measured by the Anxiety Scale, the Burden Interview, and the CES-D Scale. $quot;I¢¥he DMSs were categorized into 3 types: criticism, encouragement, and active management. The DMSs scale, the caregivers¢¥ ability in the personal efficacy and the interpersonal control, care recipients¢¥ severity of cognitive and physical functioning perceived by the caregivers, caregivers¢¥ attitudes toward responsibility for caretaking the elderly parents, and SES variables were used in the regression analysis to predict the caregivers¢¥ emotional adjustment. The encouragement type was mainly related to the level of depression in the caregivers, while the active management type anxiety for the caregivers. The findings suggested that the emotional adjustment of the caregivers depends on the type of the DIMSs that they have used. Thus, it should be said that the DMSs were important predictions for the caregivers¢¥ emotional adjustment.
